Why you do not glue a wide panel tight across the grain without a plan

A wide panel keeps changing width, and a rigid cross-grain glue line gives that change nowhere to go.

When the purchase is complete, return to the original window. It will refresh.

From the opening

A wide solid panel changes width whenever its moisture changes, while a rail glued across that width often does not change length by any similar amount. If the glue holds, the panel is trapped between sizes it cannot occupy, and either the panel splits or the joint tears. The opening covers width changes and length does not, a trapped panel splits, and grooves and slots leave a path.

The rest of the brief — the later sections and the reading notes — opens after Stripe confirms payment.
