Why stakes and weavers alternate roles

Each row reverses over and under so the stakes lock, and at the rim those stakes bend down and weave.

From the opening

Stakes are the upright ribs that give a basket its wall, and weavers are the strands that travel around those ribs. They alternate because each pass reverses which element rides on top, and at the border the stakes are turned down to do the weaving. The opening covers each row reverses over and under, reversal stops the strands sliding, and stakes are woven into the rim.

The rest of the brief — the later sections and the reading notes — opens after Stripe confirms payment.
