Why pallets have regional sizes

Pallet footprints differ by region because warehouses, racks, and trucks were built around local standards that never fully converged.

From the opening

A pallet is a platform that goods are stacked on so a forklift can move the whole stack at once. Regions settled on different lengths and widths, and then built racks, conveyors, and truck bodies around those local footprints. The opening covers footprint must match the rack, europe and North America differ, and restacking is the cost of mismatch.
