Why page imposition is not the reading order

Imposition is the plan for where each page sits on the printing sheet so that folding, and sometimes cutting, produces reading order. On the flat sheet the neighbors are whatever pages the fold will bring together, which is rarely the next page in the story. The opening covers pages placed for the fold, first and last share the outer side, and a fold reveals the order.
