End grain is the surface left when a board is cut across the fibers, so the hollow centers of the cells are open like the cut ends of straws. Stain, oil, and thin varnish are pulled into those tubes much faster than into a face, where the finish mostly meets cell walls side on. The opening covers cut cells behave like straws, stain sinks and darkens the end, and early film coats disappear inside.
